NEIGHBORHOOD READINESS PROJECT

In the event of natural disaster, fuel-supply interruption, or systemic economic failure, local markets have, on average, only three days of inventory on hand.

Neighborhoods are invited to participate in a short-term community food-storage campaign through the month of September. Discounted bulk orders for a limited list of staples will be available from participating local suppliers: SPD Markets, Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, Natural Selections & Mother Truckers Market, California Organics, BriarPatch Food Co-op and Prepare Direct.

Help with packaging your staples with nitrogen will be offered from 5-7pm on Tuesdays September 14 and 29 at Banner Community Grange in Grass Valley. (Check website for additional dates.) Concurrently with the nitrogen bagging, indigenous cultural curators will offer instruction in sustainable harvesting, preparation and storing of traditional regional foods and resources. In future, if the supply trucks aren’t rolling, we’ll be able to take care of our neighbors for a few transitional months. Nevada County will stand as a ready model for preparedness, stored-food wealth, and generosity-of-spirit. (Neighborhood block parties rather than Mad Max 😉

Participants who bring staple foods, regardless of where purchased, will be assisted with bagging, and nitrogen tanks and food-grade plastic bags will be made available for community use. (A video demonstration of the process was made when NRP launched in 2009. Go to You Tube: Bag It! Packaging Bulk Foods with Nitrogen.)This equipment will be made available on a lend basis by appointment. Though long-term storage is encouraged, participants will use their foodstuffs as they see fit. The idea is to de-centralize.. for many to hold a part. Also, auxiliary wellwater hand pumps will be available as a reduced-cost group purchase through NRP. (See Page 2 “Discount Bulk Order Staples” for more info at NeighborRP.net)
